Guide to Healthy Nutrients of
the Tropical Oil
Coconut Oil Nutrition (part 1)
Coconut oil nutrition gives us many essential benefits to our health. It's much better than those vegetable oils we usually take in every day. Now it's time to discover it closely.
Coconut oil has a wide range of nutrients that our body needs to keep healthy. Unfortunately, most people don't know what's actually inside coconut oil.
They still keep consuming vegetable oils, whereas a number of people getting the modern illness never stop increasing.
Basically, coconut oil is pure natural and chemical free. So we can take organic coconut oil instantly without going through RBD process like many vegetable oils.
Since coconut oil available in the market today is Virgin Coconut Oil or VCO, so the information on this site will be presented based on VCO. Why? Because it's the only one that gives you maximum coconut oil nutrition.
Let's take look at the outstanding properties in coconut oil...
Saturated Fatty AcidsCoconut oil contains more than 92% of saturated fatty acids. It is very much saturated in nature.
Each carbon atom bonds together, forming chain structure.
For 'Single Bond' type, each carbon atom has two hydrogen atoms bonded. So all carbon atoms are completely bonded. That's why it becomes saturated fatty acids.
Saturated fatty acids in coconut oil usually have between 8 and 14 carbon atoms in total. So there's no any double bonds available.
The primary saturated fatty acids in coconut oil comprise of:
- Carpic acid - C10
- Lauric acid - C12
- Myristic acid - C14
For example, the oil will go rancid quickly if the oxygen adds into it.
However, the quality of coconut oil nutrition remains stable because it predominantly contains Saturated fats. Only 8% Unsaturated fats are considered very few compared to other vegetable oils.
You can see chemical structure of Saturated and Unsaturated fatty acids in the picture below. Notice that Oleic acid and Linoleic acid have a couple of double bonded like between each carbon atom (C=C). Yes, it makes them become unsaturated.
We usually cook with Unsaturated oils like soybean oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil, corn oil, flaxseed oil or even olive oil. They are likely to get oxidized and become Trans Fats.
Coconut Oil Nutrition (part 2)
Now let's take a look at the benefits of Saturated oils. Coconut oil is much saturated. And because of this properties, the fatty acid structure is very stable to the following...
The oxidation is basically an oxygen-adding reaction. Rusty metal is a good example to identify the result caused by oxidation. The rust will corrode and destroy the metal structure.
Free Radical cell is the consequence outcome of the oxidation. If we get too many of them, our good cells and DNA structure in the body will negatively alter.
This is a common cause of many serious health problems these days like premature aging, heart disease, cancer, and many more.
However, an overlooked cause is daily consuming Unsaturated oil.
Of course, we do everyday. We take the diet cooked by vegetable oils like soybean oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, etc. This kind of the oils is more likely to generate free radicals inside the body.
However, the coconut oil nutrition gives you the way to reduce the chance of free radical reproduction.
At the end of the day, there are more people getting the health problem day in and day out. And the number continues increasing.
It seems to be no way out. Yes, it's inevitable.
However, you can reduce the number of free radicals by daily taking coconut oil. Why? Because it gives you powerful antioxidants (later on this page).
Most importantly, rich Saturated fats make the chemical structures very stable. So it is difficult to get oxidized by the oxygen, making the oil doesn't go rancid easily.
Normally, hydrogenation generates Trans Fats , the unhealthy fats that lead us to many health problems like heart attacks and strokes due to high cholesterol.
Obviously, there are two ways that produce Trans Fats:
2.1 CookingRepeatedly cooking with the same Unsaturated oil under a high temperature can develop Trans fats.
For example, eating french-fries available at many fast food restaurants is a simple way to get Trans fats in your body.
2.2 HydrogenetionThe process of adding hydrogen into unsaturated oil under high pressure can also generate Trans Fats.
This is for a commercial purpose. The manufacturers want to make it saturated artificially.
The reason is they don't want the oil goes rancid shortly. Another is for food manufacturing to handle easily when it becomes a solid form.
Unlike natural Saturated oil (i.e. coconut oil), the manipulation will alter the hydrogen link in fatty acid structure, making it become Trans Fats. We call it Partially Hydrogenated oil.
However, coconut oil nutrition is composed of natural saturated fatty acids. This makes it heat stable and is hard to get oxidized and hydrogenated.
Medium Chain Fatty Acids
Coconut oil contains the maximum amount of medium-chain fatty acids (MFCAs) compared to other edible oils. Coconut oil contains MFCAs at about 62.5% of total fatty acids in coconut oil.
MCFAs is one of the very special properties in coconut oil. They are beneficial to medication and nutrition purpose. You'll get...
- Instant Energy : MCFAs make coconut oil light and easy for the body to absorb quickly. It goes into a stomach, intestine, blood and turns into energy at the liver instantly and almost completely (usually within one hour). Thus, you have only fewer amounts stored in your body.
- Metabolism Boost : Small molecules of MCFAs make the oil light and do not burden your digestive system. So the enzymes can digest MCFAs easily, resulting in higher metabolic rate. The interesting benefit is that it helps improve the function of a thyroid gland too.
Coconut Oil Nutrition (part 3)
This is part three of coconut oil nutrition topic. It's the final part. This section gives you the information on the rest part of healthy nutrients present in coconut oil.
Ready? Let's go...
Anti-Microbial AgentsOne of the most interesting benefits of coconut oil is Lauric Acid. It gives you the excellent anti-microbial agents to keep your health from infection.
Coconut oil is the only edible oil in the world that has the highest amount of Lauric acid. It can be available for about 48% to 53% of all fatty acid content.
This is the reason that makes coconut oil a special property to human's health and beauty.
There is only 6% to 7% of Capric acid in coconut oil, which is less than Lauric acid. However, it helps reinforce Lauric acid's efficiency.
Lauric acid, when consumed, it turns into Monoglyceride called Monolaurin. Not only does Monolaurin give you the powerful anti-microbial agent, but it also promotes immune system to your body.
Lauric acid in coconut oil is similar to the one from mother's breat milk used to feed the first 6-month infant to start building up enough immune system.
This is because a new born body has no immune system. And it needs a certain level of immune system for the body to fight the infection.
The 48%-53% of Lauric acid found in coconut oil nutrition is higher than one in mother's breast milk, which contains only 18%.
Enig (1999) reported that Monolaurin in coconut oil can kill bacteria, fungi, yeasts, protozoa and viruses. Furthermore, Dayrit's research (2000) found Monolaurin can reduce the amounts of HIV in a person who has AIDS.
Monolaurin kills only lipid coated viruses that cause influenza, herpes, mumps, SARS and AIDS.
Because Monolaurin is kind of fatty acids, it can penetrate the lipid layer, gets into the cell and ultimately kill virus.
Until now, nothing can kill lipid coated viruses. They merely stop virus's activation for a certain period of time.
However, it doesn't kill beneficial bacteria, such as one in our stomach helping digestive system.
Besides Lauric acid, there are another three helpful MCFAs in coconut oil.
- Capric acid; C - 10, 7%
- Caprylic acid; C - 8, 8%
- Caproic acid; C - 6, 0.5%
Let's see the little known fact:
Studies found that it is possible for free radicals to generate in many vegetable oil that is predominantly composed of Unsaturated fatty acids.
Why? Because the structure of Unsaturated fatty acids are more likely to get oxidized by the oxygen in the air.
In fact, the oxidation has already occurred since the beginning of manufaturing process all the way through carrying over to the consumer!
No doubt, you get free radicals for free when you buy Unsaturated vegetable oil. They are already in the bottle. And we cook it and eat it every day!
Daily consuming unsaturated oils is the underlying cause of many serious health problems today.
This is the reason why there is an increasing number of patients who are suffering from a serious health problem, especially the Modern illness.
Luckily, coconut oil nutrition has a couple of powerful antioxidants like Vitamin E (Tocopherol and Tocotrienol), Phenol and Phytosterols.
Plus it predominantly contains Saturated fatty acids that make the oil very stable to a change of chemical structure. It really keeps the oil from oxidation (free radical) as well as hydrogenation (Trans fats) more effectively.
Vitamin E in Coconut Oil
This is another benefit in coconut oil nutrition to our health and beauty.
There are two different types of Vitamin E in coconut oil - Tocopherol (1.1 mg. /100 g.) and Tocotrienol (3.1 mg. /100 g.) (Anon., 2005).
Tocotrienol is 40-60 times more powerful than tocopherol, which is available in the over-the-counter cosmetics out there!
You can't easily find such a powerful Viamin E in other commercial skin care products.
Besides Vitamin E, Phenol and Phytosterols are other antioxidants the coconut oil nutrition has to offer. Both enhance the antioxidant power to the body.
You can simply get a high concentrated Vitamin E from applying pure coconut oil daily. Better yet, it's affordable to everyone. It couldn't be any easier than this!
This powerful antioxidant property has made coconut oil becoming the most efficient skin and hair treatment ever found in the market today.
If you're looking for skin rejuvenation lotion, anti-aging lotion or suntan lotion, simply try coconut oil. I believe you can tell the difference if you use it.
As you can see, the coconut oil nutrition gives you the incredible benefits to your health and beauty. Simply try coconut oil today, and you'll love it.
